Custom steel diametral pitch spur gear with inch bore and standard keyway

Product overview

Custom Inch and DP Gears manufacturing starts with confirmed technical requirements.

Review the gear pair, assembly conditions, drawing requirements, specification checks, and inspection points before requesting a quotation.

Custom inch gears are designed around Diametral Pitch (DP) — the number of teeth per inch of pitch diameter (DP = N / D_inch) — with dimensions, bores, hubs, and keyways specified in fractional or decimal inches. They remain essential for North American industrial machinery, agricultural equipment, machine tool replacements, and legacy power transmission rebuilds. ZhongYi manufactures custom DP spur gears, helical gears, bevel gears, and inch gear racks from engineering drawings or worn physical samples. Technical review covers Diametral Pitch (DP 4 to DP 48), pressure angle (14.5° legacy standard or 20° standard), pitch diameter, tooth count, face width, inch finished bore (with ANSI B17.1 keyways), material specification (AISI grades), and heat treatment.

Selection guidance

How to specify a custom inch and dp gears for quotation.

Use application and mating-component data to confirm geometry, materials, mounting details, and the acceptance plan.

Carefully determine whether the gear is designed in metric module or Diametral Pitch (DP). For example, Module 2 (pitch 6.283 mm) is close to DP 12.7, but meshing a Module gear with a DP gear will cause severe binding and tooth failure. Measure tooth count and outside diameter, and confirm the pressure angle (14.5° vs 20°). Provide the center distance and mating gear tooth count whenever reverse-engineering from a worn sample to ensure the original Diametral Pitch is correctly reconstructed.

Custom options

Manufacturing details that can be reviewed before quotation.

  • Standard DP spur gears, helical gears, straight bevel gears, and DP gear racks
  • 14.5-degree pressure angle cutters for vintage/legacy equipment reproduction
  • Finished inch bores with setscrew holes, broached ANSI keyways, or inch splines
  • Through-hardened, induction-hardened, or carburized and ground tooth finishing
  • Direct reverse engineering from worn North American machinery samples

Quality control

Inspection points tied to the approved technical file.

  • Verification of Imperial DP tooth parameters, pitch diameter, and pressure angle prior to tooling setup
  • Inch-calibrated gauging for bore size, keyway width/depth (ANSI B17.1), and face width
  • Tooth thickness over-pins (using inch ball sizes), runout, and pitch checks per drawing
  • Material test reports (MTR) confirming chemical composition and hardness test records

All products can be custom manufactured from 2D/3D CAD drawings or physical samples.

Quality Control & Inspection Matrix

Engineering Evidence & 100% Inspection for Custom Inch and DP Gears.

Overseas procurement teams require verifiable technical data, not unsupported claims. Every production batch at ZhongYi is inspected against approved CAD blueprints and international standards (DIN, AGMA, ISO).

Component-Specific Quality Focus:

Imperial gears are inspected using inch-calibrated measuring instruments and pin gauges. All drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and inspection certificates retain original Imperial units to prevent conversion rounding errors. Quality documentation confirms compliance with approved drawing requirements.

Coordinate Metrology

Zeiss / Hexagon 3D CMM

Validates 3D spatial GD&T, bore concentricity, center distance, and geometric tolerances down to ±0.002 mm.

Tooth Geometry Analysis

Klingelnberg CNC Gear Analyzer

Inspects involute tooth profile error (fα), lead crowning (fβ), pitch cumulative error (Fp), and radial runout (Fr).

Hardness & Case Depth

Digital Micro-Vickers & Rockwell Testers

Verifies surface hardness (58–62 HRC), core toughness, and effective carburized / nitrided case depth gradient.

Chemical Metallurgy

Direct-Reading Optical Spectrometer

100% chemical composition verification of alloy steel forgings (20CrMnTi, 42CrMo, 18CrNiMo7-6, Stainless, POM).

Technical FAQ

Common questions before ordering custom inch and dp gears products.

Critical specifications are confirmed against final drawings before production.

How can I tell if an old gear is Metric Module or Imperial DP?

Calculate the nominal Diametral Pitch (DP = (N + 2) / OD_inch for standard 20° gears) and the nominal Module (m = OD_mm / (N + 2)). If the resulting DP is an integer or standard fraction (such as 8, 10, 12, 16), it is likely an inch DP gear. Providing the mating gear and center distance confirms the design.

Can ZhongYi broach ANSI standard inch keyways?

Yes. We maintain tooling for standard ANSI B17.1 square and rectangular inch keyways, as well as set-screw threads in standard UNC / UNF imperial thread sizes.

Why is the pressure angle (14.5° vs 20°) important on DP gears?

Older American machinery frequently used 14.5° pressure angles for quiet running, whereas modern gears typically use 20°. A 14.5° gear cannot mesh properly with a 20° gear even if both have the same Diametral Pitch.
